Devices and firmware

A device (Lucky Device) is installed in each machine. It has nothing to configure: it gets its address on the venue network, finds the server on its own, then waits to be adopted in the back office. This page covers the technician’s job: connect, install the device’s program (the firmware), check.

  1. Connect the device to the machine (link with the machine) and to the venue network with its Ethernet cable.
  2. Power it on. It beeps at start-up and its screen shows the current step (see below).
  3. When the screen shows A ADOPTER and an ID … code, adopt it in the back office (see Adding machines).

The program is loaded into the device over USB, from a Windows or Linux PC, with the flash package supplied by the publisher: a self-contained folder holding the ready-made program (a .hex file) and the scripts flash.cmd (Windows), flash.sh (Linux) and diagnostic.cmd. The PC only needs the avrdude tool, which comes with the Arduino 2 IDE (Windows), or the avrdude package (Linux).

  1. Connect the device to the PC with a data USB cable (not a charge-only cable).
  2. Close any serial monitor open on this port.
  3. Start the flash:
    • Windows: double-click flash.cmd, or, if there are several ports, in a command prompt opened in the folder:

📍 Type on: Windows PC (flash package folder)

      Fenêtre de terminal
      flash.cmd COM5
The port number is in Device Manager, under “Ports (COM & LPT)”.
    • Linux:

📍 Type on: Linux PC (flash package folder)

      Fenêtre de terminal
      ./flash.sh /dev/ttyACM0
  4. At the end: “avrdude done. Thank you.”, then the device’s screen restarts.

As long as the machine is not ready, the first line shows the missing step, the second shows who (the machine number, or the device’s ID … code):

Screen What is missing What to do
PAS DE RESEAU Ethernet cable unplugged or dead Plug it in, change the cable or the switch port.
ATTENTE ADRESSE the router gives no address Check the router’s DHCP.
CHERCHE SERVEUR the server is not answering yet Is the venue PC on, on the same network?
CONNEXION... connecting Wait a few seconds.
SERVEUR REFUSE another server answered The router is redirecting the device elsewhere: see Venue network.
A ADOPTER + ID … the device is waiting to be adopted Back office: Exploitation (Operations) → Boîtiers en attente (Pending devices).
number + MACHINE MUETTE the machine does not answer the device Cable between device and machine, machine address.
number + credit all is well —

Along the way, short messages appear for a few seconds: the address obtained with IP PAR DHCP, then SERVEUR TROUVE. A board reused on another plate shows CARTE CHANGEE / memoire videe: this is normal, it starts afresh and waits to be adopted. Details of the screen and sounds are in Device display and beeps.

  • The Firmware column gives each adopted device’s version; compare it with the flash package’s version (the .hex file name carries it, for example 2.0.0-F6.45).
  • The addressing (DHCP or statique (static)) and the Contact column tell you whether the device is talking to the server.
  • Faire sonner (Ring) makes a device beep and shows C'EST MOI on its screen, so you can find it in the venue.
  • Paramètres (Settings) → Réseau (Network) shows, read-only, what the server announces and how many devices are on DHCP or static.

For a problem on a machine, the flash package also has a diagnostic mode that records everything the device says: see Diagnostics.

The device has a serial console (115200 baud), only for looking or as a last resort. serial-log.cmd COM5 opens it on Windows (type the command then Enter).

Command Effect
show Identity, plate, network, machine number.
reset Resets the network and the machine number (the rest is kept).
usine OUI Empties the board’s memory (machine, profile, meters, log, network, plate). Refused if money is in progress, if a balance remains or a manual payment is pending. The device restarts and waits to be adopted.

In the back office, an administrator can also Remettre la carte à neuf… (Reset the board to new…) from the machine’s page (see Devices).
